Growth of the Game

After the sports split football, football rapidly began to proffesionalise. by 1872 the first competion had began: the FA cup. The first league was then later setup up in 1888. The first international game of football was in 1872 and it was England vs Scotland.  Scotland, Ireland, and Wales all setup up football associations in quick succession throughout this decade. But it wasn't until the rest of Europe started getting involved that the game really became a national sport.

The Beginning of Football

Rugby and football are both believed to have come from the Greek game harpaston. But football as a sport know is believed to have originated in the 12th century England, however it wasn't recognised as a sport until the 1800s when it began to gain rules. On the 26th of October 1863, 11 clubs and schools from London gathered together at Freemasons Tavern to discuss the rules that were to be set down for this game which were acceptable to everyone (the rugby and football schools). This meeting became the start of the Football Association.
